You know the inevitable conversion that comes up when somebody suggests going out for some food? Where shall we go? What do you fancy? The problem is that because we’re British, we always try to have that easy-breezy air about us and claim that we ‘dont mind’ what we eat or where we go, and lets face it, all this does is mean that decisions never get made. That’s where places like Kommune, Sheffield really start to shine.
Kommune Sheffield at a Glance
What is it?
Kommune is a food hall filled with various street food style vendors, a bar, a bottle shop and a library.
Where is it?
Kommune is inside the old Castle House building, Castlegate in Sheffield City Centre.
What are they serving?
A bit of everything! They’ve truly got breakfast, lunch, and dinner sorted. Plus you don’t all have to eat from the same vendor which makes it ideal for groups.
Is Kommune Dog Friendly?
Kommune is dog friendly all day every day, there’s plenty of space between tables which makes it ideal for your dog to lay down.
Kommune, Sheffield Review
Kommune has long been one of our favourite spots to go for something to eat, mainly due to the choice on offer and the space on offer for our dog. Kommune is Sheffield city centres food hall in the Castlegate area inside the old Castle House building and next door to the National Video Game Museum. As you walk through the big double doors, you’re hit with the sight and smell of the food vendors to your right and plenty of tables (both high and low) as well as booths to choose from on your left.
Kommune Menu
You won’t find Kommune’s menu online due to its ever-changing nature. Here are the current food vendors in residency and the type of food they offer:
Depot Pizza – Sourdough Pizza, Pides and Calzones
Chaat Cart – Indian Street Food, they also serve up traditional Indian Tiffins
Fat Hippo Burger – Ooozy, huge burgers and dirty fries
Shoot the Bull Rotisserie and Grill – Specialising in Wagyu steak sandwiches and burgers
The Depot Bakery – Baked goods and brunch specialties
Yoki – Korean fried chicken and more
Torito – Tacos and Quesadillas
Tamper Coffee – Serving up their specialty coffee that you’d get from their Sellers Wheel location
JH Mann Fishmongers – Quality seafood dishes
MorMor – Middle Eastern Street Food
Pre-Covid you would approach the vendor with your order, pay there and then and depending on the time of day you visit you’d be given a buzzing alarm for when your meal was ready so you could go collect it, or in the evening it’d be brought to your table. Since we’re currently under Covid restrictions all orders are made through Kommune’s app and brought to your table when ready.
As previously mentioned, one of the benefits for a dog owner is that there is plenty of space between tables, it’s worth requesting a low table if they have any available because the tall tables can mean you’re a little far away from your dog. Space usually means your dog will be more relaxed and make eating that little bit easier. Our lab Ed likes laying under the table and peeking out when the servers come over.
I reckon over time I’ve tried pretty much all the vendors in Kommune and they’ve all been pretty great. On this occasion, we opted for a meal from Chaat Cart and a meal from Depot Pizza.
Chaat Cart
I opted for the Chicken Kati Wrap, marinated chicken thighs served on a flat bread with rainbow slaw, green chutney and chilli sauce with a side of their gunpowder fries. Everything I’ve tried from Chaat Cart has been super tasty, and this wrap felt really fresh and light. Their gunpowder fries are a must-try for spice fans, you’ll never go back to normal style fries again.
Depot Pizza
Depot Pizza Co. serves up different tasty sourdough pizza options, on this occasion we opted for their salt beef, mozzarella and pickle calzone. The salt beef in this calzone was to die for, the mozzarella instantly came oozing out as soon as you cut into it. Calzone’s are never the most Instagram worthy of dinners, but this one is well worth a try. It’s served with a cold pizza sauce on the side for dipping.
Top Tip
If I could offer a tip for eating at Kommune, it’s to work out what your food is being served with. Many options don’t come with fries etc, and rather than opting for the fries from your chosen venue, have a look at some of the others as you may find cheaper fries elsewhere, or you may be tempted into gunpowder fries, dirty fries, waffle fries or some of the other fantastic sides on offer. We did just that and picked up some garlic and herb fries from MorMor.
If I had one complaint about Kommune, it’d probably be the app as it’s really quite clunky to use. You have to enter your table number any time you want to change the vendor that you’re viewing, and due to the vendors all being separate, you have to go through the order process for each different vendor rather than ordering all at once. That being said, you can collect points via the app and redeem for money off, it currently works out around 10 points per ยฃ1 spend, 500 points means you can redeem ยฃ5 back and it’s never been something that has kept me away.
